PART 3 — THE SECRET FRANK DIED PROTECTING

My mother pressed one trembling finger against her lips.
Neither of us moved.
The man outside knocked again.
“Open the door!”
I recognized the voice.
Not personally.
But somehow, from somewhere buried deep inside my childhood memories.
My mother grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the kitchen.
“Quickly.”
“Who is he?” I whispered.
“I’ll explain, but we have to get away from the door.”
She opened a narrow pantry door and revealed a hidden staircase behind it.
I stared at her.
“You have a secret staircase?”
“Frank had it built.”
My heart pounded.
“Why?”
“Because he knew this day might come.”
We hurried down the steps into a cold basement.

My mother locked the door behind us.
Then she pulled out an old flashlight.
“Frank used this room whenever he came here.”
I stared at her.
“He came here?”
“Every few months.”
My stomach twisted.
“All those years he told me he was working late…”
“He was here.”
“With you?”
She nodded.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“So he kept seeing you while I believed you were dead?”
“He wasn’t visiting me for himself.”
She opened an old metal box.
“He was checking on you.”
Inside were dozens of photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, and documents.

I picked up the first photograph.
It showed me at age six, standing outside my elementary school.
Another showed me at ten, riding a bicycle.
Another showed me receiving my high-school diploma.
There were photographs from every stage of my life.
Someone had been watching me.
For decades.
“Who took these?”
My mother swallowed.
“Frank.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because he needed proof that you were safe.”
Before I could ask another question, footsteps sounded above us.

The man had entered the house.
My mother’s face went white.
“He’s inside.”
“How?”
She whispered, “He has a key.”
The basement door rattled.
I instinctively stepped backward.
Then the man spoke from upstairs.
“I know you’re down there.”
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
She leaned close to me.
“Whatever happens, don’t give him the envelope.”
I looked at the brown envelope lying on the floor.

“What is in it?”
“The truth about your father.”
I froze.
“My father?”
Frank had always told me my biological father disappeared before I was born.
He said my mother had been alone when I came into the world.
But my mother shook her head.
“Frank wasn’t your father.”
“I know.”
She stared directly into my eyes.
“No. You don’t understand.”
She picked up a photograph from the metal box.
It showed a young man standing beside my mother.
I had never seen him before.
But I knew his face.
Because I had seen that face in the newspaper only a few weeks earlier.
He was one of the richest businessmen in the state.
And according to the newspaper, he had died twenty-nine years ago.
“Who is he?” I whispered.
My mother closed her eyes.
“His name was Daniel.”
I looked at the photograph again.
“Why does he look familiar?”
“Because you have his eyes.”
My breath caught.
“You’re saying he’s my father?”
She nodded.
“He was.”
A violent crash came from upstairs.
The basement door shook.
My mother grabbed the envelope.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“Daniel didn’t die in an accident.”
I stared at her.
“He was murdered.”
The door shook again.
This time, the lock began to crack.
My mother shoved the envelope into my hands.
“Your father left something for you before he died.”
“What?”
“A fortune.”
I couldn’t speak.
“Not money,” she continued. “Something much more dangerous.”
The lock finally broke.
The door flew open.
A tall man stood at the top of the stairs.
He slowly descended, holding a photograph in one hand.
I recognized him immediately.
He was the man from the newspaper.
But that was impossible.
Because the newspaper said he had died twenty-nine years ago.
He smiled.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
My mother screamed.
“Daniel!”
I stared at the man in disbelief.
My mother grabbed my shoulders.
“Run!”
But Daniel calmly raised the photograph.
“You’ve been lied to your entire life.”
He looked at me.
“And Frank wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.”……………………
