I stood frozen, my heart pounding in my chest, unable to process what I was seeing through the narrow gap in the door. Daniel was kneeling beside the tub, his back to me, surrounded by a clutter of bath toys. Lily sat in the water, her eyes wide and uncertain, glancing from her father to the door where I stood.
For a moment, I couldn’t move. My mind raced as I tried to grasp the reality of the situation. I had to protect Lily. I had to do something. But the fear that tangled around my heart made it hard to breathe, let alone think. As if sensing my presence, Lily turned her head, her gaze locking onto mine. Her small face was a mixture of hope and fear, her eyes pleading silently with me.
Summoning every ounce of courage I had, I pushed the door open wider and stepped into the bathroom. Daniel looked up, surprise flickering across his features, but I couldn’t focus on him. My attention was fixed solely on Lily, who was now clutching one of her bath toys, her tiny hands trembling.
“Lily,” I said softly, ignoring Daniel’s questioning gaze. “Why don’t you get out of the water and dry off? I’ll help you get dressed.”
Lily hesitated, glancing at Daniel, who merely shrugged with an air of nonchalance. “Sure, go ahead, sweetheart,” he said, but I could hear the edge in his voice, the subtle weight of authority he was trying to maintain.
I wrapped Lily in her towel and hugged her close, feeling the dampness seep through my clothes. “Go to your room, honey. I’ll be right there,” I whispered into her ear. She nodded, relief washing over her small features as she scampered out of the bathroom.
Once she was gone, I turned to face Daniel. The man I had once loved, the man I thought I knew, now felt like a stranger. “What were you doing?” I asked, my voice trembling but firm. I needed answers, even if I feared what they might be.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed slightly, a shadow of defensiveness crossing his face. “We were just playing with her toys, like always,” he replied, his tone casual. But there was something in his demeanor that didn’t sit right, something that made my instincts scream.

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. “Lily said you told her not to talk about the ‘bath games.’ What did you mean by that?”
He paused, and for a brief moment, the mask slipped. An expression of annoyance, perhaps even guilt, flickered across his face before he quickly regained his composure. “Look, you’re overreacting,” he said, standing up. “I’m her father. I would never do anything to hurt her.”
But the doubt that had been planted in my mind refused to be silenced. I knew I had to trust my instincts, even if it meant questioning everything I had believed about my husband.
“I want you to stay away from Lily during bath time from now on,” I said, my voice gaining strength with each word. “Until I understand what’s been happening, things are going to change.”
Daniel opened his mouth to protest but then seemed to think better of it. Instead, he nodded, a tense silence enveloping the room.
I turned and left the bathroom, my heart heavy but resolute. I found Lily in her room, her hair still damp, her stuffed bunny clutched tightly to her chest. She looked at me with wide eyes, waiting for reassurance, for safety.
I sat beside her, pulling her into a gentle embrace. “Everything is going to be okay, Lily. I promise,” I whispered, feeling her relax against me, trusting in my words.
As I sat there, holding my daughter, I knew this was only the beginning. There were still so many questions left unanswered, and I had to find the truth for Lily’s sake. But for now, all that mattered was keeping her safe.
