PART4: After I retired, my daughter laughed in my face

PART 17: THE VISITOR
The treatments continued.
Some days were easy.
Others were not.
One rainy afternoon, I was resting in my chair when someone knocked on the front door.
I wasn’t expecting company.
When I opened it, I found a man standing there.
Late sixties.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he smiled.
A smile I immediately disliked.
“Richard Peterson?”
“Yes.”
He extended his hand.
“My name is Charles Bennett.”
The name meant nothing to me.
Until he added five words.
“I knew your father.”
Every muscle in my body froze.
My father had been dead for twenty years.
Very few people still talked about him.
“What do you want?”
Charles glanced past me into the house.
“I think we should talk.”
Something about him felt wrong.
But curiosity won.
I stepped aside.
And that decision would change everything.

PART 18: THE SECRET DEBT

Charles sat across from me in the living room.

Calm.

Patient.

Almost too comfortable.

Then he placed an old document on the table.

I picked it up.

My hands began shaking immediately.

Because I recognized the signature.

My father’s.

The document was over forty years old.

A business agreement.

And according to the paperwork, my father had borrowed a large sum of money from Charles’s family.

A very large sum.

“What is this?”

Charles folded his hands.

“A debt.”

My stomach tightened.

“My father paid his debts.”

Charles smiled slightly.

“Not this one.”

I read the document again.

And again.

The numbers were unbelievable.

With interest, the amount now exceeded two million dollars.

I looked up.

“You expect me to believe this?”

“No.”

Charles leaned forward.

“I expect you to pay it.”

The room fell silent.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was ridiculous.

“I’ll have my attorney review everything.”

Charles stood.

“Please do.”

As he reached the door, he stopped.

Then turned back toward me.

“The clock is already running, Richard.”

After he left, I stared at the document for nearly an hour.

Something wasn’t right.

Something felt very wrong.

And deep down, I knew this wasn’t really about money.

PART 19: THE CHOICE

That evening, I called Sarah, Michael, and Rebecca.

They arrived within an hour.

I showed them the document.

Nobody spoke while reading it.

Finally Michael looked up.

“This feels like a scam.”

“I know.”

Sarah frowned.

“Then why are you worried?”

Because I had seen something in Charles’s eyes.

Something familiar.

The look of a man who believed he already had the upper hand.

Rebecca studied the paperwork.

Then suddenly pointed to a line near the bottom.

“Wait.”

We all looked.

“What?”

She tapped the page.

“This witness signature.”

I leaned closer.

So did Sarah.

My heart nearly stopped.

Because I recognized the name.

James Holloway.

My former business partner.

The same man whose name I hadn’t heard in decades.

The same man connected to secrets I had spent years trying to forget.

Michael looked confused.

“You know him?”

I slowly nodded.

The room became very quiet.

Because this was no longer about my father.

And it was no longer about an old debt.

Somehow…

This was connected to my past.

And whatever was coming next had been waiting for me for a very long time.

PART 20: THE NAME IN THE FILE

I barely slept that night.

James Holloway.

The name kept replaying in my mind.

For years, I had convinced myself that chapter of my life was over.

Buried.

Gone.

Now it was sitting on my dining room table.

The next morning, I drove straight to my attorney’s office.

He spent nearly two hours reviewing the documents Charles Bennett had delivered.

When he finally looked up, his expression was serious.

“Well?”

He tapped the papers.

“The debt is questionable.”

I exhaled.

“But?”

He nodded.

“But the signatures are real.”

My stomach dropped.

Every signature on the document had been verified.

Including James Holloway’s.

I stared through the office window.

Because that meant one thing.

If this was a scam…

Someone had spent decades preparing it.

And if it wasn’t…

Then I was about to uncover a truth I never wanted to face.

PART 21: THE CONFESSION

Three days later, I found James.

He lived alone in a small house nearly two hours away.

When he opened the door, he looked older than I remembered.

Much older.

The moment he saw me, all the color drained from his face.

“Richard.”

I nodded.

“James.”

For several seconds neither of us moved.

Then he stepped aside.

“I wondered when you’d come.”

Inside, neither of us bothered with small talk.

I placed the document on his kitchen table.

His eyes widened.

He recognized it instantly.

“You know why I’m here.”

James lowered himself into a chair.

Slowly.

Like a man carrying a weight for far too long.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“For what?”

Tears appeared in his eyes.

“For all of it.”

My heart began pounding.

Because guilty people don’t apologize before answering questions.

They apologize because they already know the truth.

And whatever truth James was about to reveal…

I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear it.

PART 22: THE BETRAYAL

James stared at the table for a long time.

Then he finally spoke.

“Your father never owed that money.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

“He paid everything.”

I blinked.

“What are you talking about?”

James swallowed hard.

“Charles knows it too.”

For a moment I couldn’t breathe.

Because if the debt had been paid…

Then the entire claim was a lie.

A carefully planned lie.

“But there’s more.”

I already hated those words.

James reached into a drawer and removed a faded folder.

Inside were bank records.

Receipts.

Letters.

Proof.

Years of proof.

Then he looked directly at me.

“The reason Charles came after you isn’t because of your father.”

My chest tightened.

“Then why?”

James closed his eyes.

Because even after all these years, saying it hurt.

When he finally spoke, his voice barely rose above a whisper.

“Because I told him how much you’re worth.”

The room spun.

For thirty years, James had been my friend.

My business partner.

Someone I trusted.

And now I was staring at the man who had opened the door for a predator to walk into my family’s life.

“I never meant for it to happen,” he said.

But I wasn’t listening anymore.

Because some betrayals don’t come from enemies.

They come from people you once called brother……
