My fingers tightened around the object as I stared at it. It was a small black metal box, about the size of my palm. It was heavier than it looked, and the surface was scratched and covered with tiny marks. There was no lock on the outside, only a narrow slot on one side and a tiny red light that was completely dark.
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
Why would a nine-year-old boy hide something like this under his mattress?
I turned the box over, searching for a name or some kind of explanation. On the bottom was a faded white sticker with a series of numbers written in black marker.
I didn’t recognize them.
Then I noticed something else.
There was a tiny microphone hole on the front.
My stomach dropped.
“Is this some kind of recording device?”
I immediately thought about the strange things I’d noticed over the summer. Ben never wanted to leave his green backpack alone. Whenever I asked what was inside, he’d smile nervously and say, “Just my stuff, Grandma.”
Once, I’d even tried to carry the backpack upstairs for him when he was outside playing.
He had run into the house so quickly that he nearly knocked over a lamp.
“Don’t touch that!”
I’d never seen him look so frightened.
At the time, I assumed he was simply being possessive about a child’s secret collection.
Now I wasn’t so sure.
I placed the black box on the bed and hurried downstairs. I wanted to call Adam immediately, but something stopped me.
If this belonged to him, why had Ben hidden it?
And why had he looked at this exact bedroom window before getting into the car?
I walked to the kitchen and picked up my phone.
I opened Adam’s contact.
My thumb hovered over the call button.
Then I remembered something Tara had said two weeks earlier.
She had called me late one evening to check on the children. During the conversation, she suddenly asked, “Mom, has Ben ever said anything strange about the house?”
I laughed and told her no.
She became quiet for a moment.
Then she said, “If he does, don’t encourage him. He’s been imagining things lately.”
At the time, I thought she was talking about monsters or ghosts.
But now I wondered.
Was she trying to warn me?
Or was she trying to make sure I wouldn’t believe him?
I put my phone down.
Instead of calling Adam, I went back upstairs.
I picked up the box again and examined the narrow slot on the side. It looked like it could accept a small memory card.
My heart began pounding.
I remembered Ben sitting at my old laptop several times during the summer. He always asked permission before using it, and I never suspected anything.
I rushed downstairs, opened the laptop, and searched through the files.
There was nothing unusual.
Then I noticed a folder I’d never seen before.
It was hidden among hundreds of ordinary vacation photos.
The folder had no name.
I clicked it.
There were twenty-three video files inside.
My hands went cold.
I opened the first one.
The screen showed my own living room.
I was sitting on the couch, folding laundry.
The camera angle was strange.
It was positioned high in the corner of the room.
I watched myself for several seconds.
Then I realized something horrifying.
The video had been recorded while I was sleeping upstairs.
Someone had been watching me.
I opened another file.
Then another.
Different rooms.
Different days.
My kitchen.
My backyard.
The hallway.
My bedroom door.
Every video had been secretly recorded inside my house.
I covered my mouth with my hand.
“Who did this?”
Then I opened the newest video.
The footage was from the night before Adam and Tara arrived to pick up the children.
The camera showed the upstairs hallway.
Ben slowly stepped into view.
He was carrying his little green backpack.
He looked directly toward the camera.
Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“Grandma doesn’t know yet.”
He opened the backpack.
He pulled out a small device.
Then he looked over his shoulder before whispering,
“If they find this, they’ll know we told.”
My heart stopped.
“We?”
Ben wasn’t alone.
I replayed the video.
This time, I listened carefully.
Behind Ben, from somewhere inside the darkness of the hallway, came a faint child’s voice.
“Ben… hurry.”
It was Sophie.
I stared at the screen, unable to breathe.
My grandchildren hadn’t been protecting a toy.
They had been hiding something from their parents.
And whatever they had discovered during those two months in my house was serious enough that two little children were terrified of being caught.
I immediately reached for my phone.
This time, I was going to call Adam.
But before I could press his name, my phone rang.
The caller ID made my blood run cold.
It was Tara.
I answered.
There was silence on the other end.
Then Tara whispered,
“Mom… please tell me you haven’t found what’s under Ben’s mattress.”
I froze.
She knew.
But how?
Then I heard a man’s voice in the background.
“Ask her if she opened it.”
Tara’s breathing suddenly became shaky.
And then she said something that made my entire body go numb.
“Mom, whatever you do… don’t let Ben come back to this house.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then, from upstairs, I heard three slow knocks coming from the guest room.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
I slowly looked toward the ceiling.
The house was supposed to be empty.
But someone was upstairs.
And I suddenly realized the black box wasn’t the only thing Ben had hidden in my house.
Something—or someone—was still there………………………
