I couldn’t move.
I stood in the kitchen with the phone still pressed against my ear, even though the call had already ended.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The sound came again.
This time, I knew it was coming from upstairs.
Someone was in my house.
I quietly locked the back door and grabbed the largest kitchen knife I could find. My hands were shaking so badly that I nearly dropped it.
I didn’t call out.
I didn’t want whoever was upstairs to know where I was.
I stepped onto the staircase and slowly climbed.
Every creak of the wooden steps sounded deafening in the silence.
When I reached the hallway, I stopped.
The guest room door was slightly open.
I was certain I’d left it closed.
I pushed it open with my foot.
The room was empty.
The bed was still stripped.
The black metal box was exactly where I’d left it.
But something had changed.
The mattress had been moved.
Not much.
Just a few inches.
I walked closer.
There were fresh scratches on the wooden floor beneath the bed.
Someone had pulled it away from the wall.
I crouched down and looked underneath.
At first, I saw nothing.
Then I noticed a thin black cable disappearing through a small hole in the wall.
My heart began pounding.
I followed the cable with my eyes.
It led behind the old wooden dresser.
I moved the dresser aside.
There was a tiny square opening in the wall.
It had been carefully covered with paint, almost impossible to notice.
I touched it.
The panel moved.
Behind it was a narrow hidden compartment.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
My photographs.
Pictures of me leaving the house.
Pictures of me gardening.
Pictures of me sleeping in my living room chair.
Pictures of Ben and Sophie playing in the backyard.
But the newest photographs weren’t taken from outside.
They had clearly been taken from inside my home.
Someone had been living in my house without my knowledge.
I grabbed the photographs and ran downstairs.
My mind raced through every possibility.
Could it be Adam?
Tara?
Someone they knew?
I suddenly remembered something from six weeks earlier.
Ben had asked me a strange question.
“Grandma, does the attic have another way out?”
I had laughed.
“No, sweetheart. Why?”
He had simply shrugged.
“I was just wondering.”
I hadn’t thought about it since.
Now I did.
I ran to the attic.
The door was locked.
I had kept it locked for years because I rarely went up there.
I searched through a drawer downstairs and found the old key.
When I opened the attic door, a wave of cold air hit my face.
Dust floated through the beam of light from the hallway.
I climbed the narrow stairs.
Nothing seemed unusual at first.
Old furniture.
Boxes of Christmas decorations.
My husband’s old suitcases.
Then I noticed footprints in the dust.
Fresh footprints.
Small ones.
They led toward the far wall.
I followed them.
At the wall was an old wooden trunk.
I opened it.
Inside were children’s clothes, blankets, and several empty food wrappers.
My breathing stopped.
Someone had been hiding here.
Recently.
Then I found a folded piece of paper underneath the blankets.
I opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
It belonged to Ben.
There were only six words written on the page.
“Grandma, please don’t trust Dad.”
I stared at the words until they blurred.
Adam.
My own son.
What could he possibly have done to make his nine-year-old son afraid of him?
Suddenly, I heard my phone ringing downstairs.
I ran back down and looked at the screen.
It was Adam.
I answered immediately.
“Adam, where are you?”
He didn’t respond.
I could hear the sound of a car engine.
Then he whispered,
“Mom, listen carefully. Tara doesn’t know I’m calling you.”
My heart jumped.
“What are you talking about?”
There was a long silence.
Then Adam said,
“Ben and Sophie weren’t supposed to tell you anything.”
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me what?”
His voice became almost inaudible.
“The renovations aren’t real.”
I froze.
“What?”
“We didn’t send the kids to you because of construction,” he said. “We sent them because someone was looking for them.”
My stomach turned.
“Who?”
Adam didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked,
“Did you find the box?”
I looked toward the kitchen counter.
“Yes.”
His breathing suddenly changed.
“Mom… destroy it.”
“Why?”
“Because that box contains proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Before he could answer, another voice came through the phone.
A woman’s voice.
Tara.
“Adam?”
The line went completely silent.
Then I heard Adam shout,
“Mom, get out of the house!”
The call disconnected.
At that exact moment, the front door downstairs slowly opened.
I froze on the staircase.
Someone had just walked into my house.
Then I heard a familiar voice.
“Mom?”
It was Tara.
I looked down.
She stood in the doorway.
But she wasn’t alone.
A tall man stood behind her.
And when he looked up at me, I recognized him instantly.
He was the same man I’d seen in one of the photographs hidden behind the wall.
He smiled.
Then he said,
“So… Ben finally told you.”………………….
