PART 4 — THE TRUTH ADAM WAS HIDING

I stood frozen halfway down the staircase.
Tara was staring at me from the doorway, her face pale and terrified. But the man beside her didn’t look frightened at all.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
His eyes moved from me to the kitchen counter, where the black metal box was sitting.
Then he smiled.
“So… Ben finally told you.”
My grip tightened around the railing.
“Who are you?”
The man didn’t answer.
Instead, Tara stepped forward.
“Mom, please. Just listen to me.”
“Listen to you?” I whispered. “You lied to me about the renovations. You sent my grandchildren here because someone was looking for them. And now this man is standing in my house.”
Tara’s eyes filled with tears.
“We didn’t know who else to trust.”
“Then why did you tell me not to let Ben come back?”
She looked at the man beside her.
He finally spoke.
“Because Ben has something that belongs to me.”

I felt a chill run through my body.
“What does a nine-year-old boy possibly have that belongs to you?”
The man’s smile disappeared.
“Evidence.”
That one word made everything suddenly make sense.
The cameras.
The hidden compartment.
The black box.
The photographs.
The children’s fear.
But there was still one question I couldn’t answer.
“Why would Ben be recording everything?”
Tara looked down.
“Because he saw something he wasn’t supposed to see.”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
She took a shaky breath.
“Three months ago, Adam discovered that money was disappearing from his company’s accounts.”

I frowned.
“What does that have to do with my grandchildren?”
“Everything.”
She explained that Adam had hired someone to investigate the missing money. The investigation eventually led to a business partner who had been secretly transferring company funds into another account.
That business partner was the man standing in my doorway.
His name was Victor.
But there was something Adam hadn’t told Tara.
Victor wasn’t working alone.
When Adam confronted him, Victor threatened to destroy Adam’s family unless Adam stopped the investigation.
That’s when Adam and Tara became afraid.
They couldn’t go to the police.
They couldn’t trust anyone connected to the company.
So they sent Ben and Sophie to me under the excuse of a renovation.

I stared at Tara.
“Then why did Ben hide the evidence here?”
“Because he didn’t trust us anymore.”
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?”
Tara wiped her tears.
“Ben saw Victor talking to someone late one night. He secretly recorded them. After that, he became terrified.”
“Who was Victor talking to?”
Tara didn’t answer.
Victor did.
“Your son.”
My entire body went cold.
“No.”
Victor stepped closer.
“Adam wasn’t just investigating the missing money.”
“Stop lying.”
“I’m not.”
He pulled a small photograph from his coat and placed it on the table.
It showed Adam sitting across from another man in a dark restaurant.

Money was spread across the table between them.
I stared at the picture.
“That’s impossible.”
Victor shook his head.
“Your son took money from the company.”
Tara suddenly turned toward him.
“That’s not true!”
Victor laughed.
“You still believe him?”
Tara looked at me.
“Mom, Adam was trying to recover the money. He was meeting the accountant who discovered the transfers.”
“Then why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because the accountant was murdered.”
Silence filled the room.
I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.
“Murdered?”
Tara nodded.
“And Adam believes Victor was responsible.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Careful.”
Tara stepped backward.
“You threatened him!”
“I warned him.”
“About what?”
Victor looked directly at me.
“About what happens when people keep secrets.”
Suddenly, my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived.
It was from Adam.
I opened it.
There were only three words.
DON’T TRUST TARA.
I slowly looked up.
Tara was watching me.
She immediately knew from my face that something had happened.
“What did he say?”
I didn’t answer.
Victor reached for the phone.
I stepped backward.
“Don’t touch me.”
Then I remembered the black box.
The tiny red light.
The microphone.
The hidden recordings.
I grabbed it from the counter and held it tightly.
Victor’s face changed instantly.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“Give me that.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
“I think I understand perfectly.”
Victor took another step toward me.
Tara suddenly blocked his path.
“Leave her alone.”
Victor pushed her aside.
I ran.
I grabbed the box and rushed toward the back door.
But before I could reach it, I heard a loud crash upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
Tara whispered,
“That’s impossible.”
“What?” I asked.
She stared at me with terror in her eyes.
“Ben told me there was one more recording.”
“What recording?”
“The one he made before they left.”
I looked toward the stairs.
Another crash came from upstairs.
Then I heard something fall.
Victor suddenly ran toward the staircase.
I followed him.
We reached the guest room.
The mattress had been pulled completely off the bed.
The hidden compartment in the wall was wide open.
But the photographs were gone.
So was the note Ben had written.
On the floor was only the green backpack.
I opened it with trembling hands.
Inside was a small envelope addressed to me.
My name was written across the front in Ben’s handwriting.
I opened it.
There was a tiny memory card inside.
And beneath it was a handwritten message:
Grandma, if you’re reading this, it means Dad didn’t make it back in time.
My heart stopped.
Then I turned the card over.
On the back, Ben had written one final sentence.
The person you should be afraid of isn’t Victor.
I looked at Tara.
Then at Victor.
And finally at the staircase.
Because suddenly I understood.
Someone had been inside my house before Tara and Victor arrived.
And that person had known exactly where Ben hid the evidence.
My phone vibrated again.
This time, the message came from an unknown number.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
Ask Tara why Sophie disappeared.
I looked at my daughter-in-law.
Her face went completely white……………………….
